Best Way to Drive to Myrtle Beach - all the new roads included in new directions!

Best Airlines & Fares

Myrtle Beach - easily reached from most major eastern cities...but everyone that has ever driven to Myrtle Beach knows that sometime you can get bogged down by traffic.

Myrtle Beach has gotten some new roads to ease the congestion that was such a bottleneck in some areas. Traditionally one of the biggest problems was getting in and out of Myrtle Beach across Hwy 501. Saturdays were congested due to incoming traffic and Sunday afternoons were a nightmare getting out!

When we traveled back and forth from New York to Myrtle for many years, we would cut down through Georgetown, take Route 521 and all the back ways - out of the way, but worth it then. Now there is relief! A new four-lane highway, Route 22, 60 mph road links 501 west of Conway, makes a grand circle and brings you out on Route 17, north of Myrtle Beach - close to Kingston Plantation and Barefoot Landing, where many golfers head.

The new Carolina Bays Parkway can be picked up at the new Carolina Forrest development on 501. It goes from 501 to Route 9 in Little River.

Robert Grissom Parkway (new as well) runs from Harrelson Blvd (the new access road to MB International Airport) to the Carolina Bays Parkway or visa versa. This road runs parallel to Route 17 from the Airport, cuts over to Carolina Bay Parkway at about 62nd Street - so from Route 701 to 62nd street you can bypass all the mid Myrtle Beach traffic. These roads have been life-savers for locals and tourists alike.

Depending on which part of the Grand Strand you would like to go, you can use the following directions. For many years we drove back and forth to New York, Cincinnati, Raleigh, Atlanta and Florida. All within easy driving distances.

From the North and I-95:

Exit I-95 at Dillon, SC and follow route 301 to Latta and then 501 East. If you're headed south of 501, you might want to take 544 which brings you out on Route 17 south of Myrtle Beach airport. This is the way to go if you're headed for Surfside, Garden City, Murrells Inlet, Pawleys Island or Georgetown. It's approximately 30 miles all the way down to Georgetown!

If you're headed north you can take new route 22 in Conway to North Myrtle Beach. (the Barefoot Landing, Kinston Plantation area). You can also continue on 501 and pick up the new Carolina Bays Pkwy and exit onto Robert Grissom Pkwy to go to any of Central Myrtle Beach. These new routes will prevent you from growing old in your car!

From the South and I-95:

Take 26 East towards Charleston, SC. Then 526 East to Mount Pleasant. Continue and take exit to 17 North to Georgetown. Continue on 17 North through Georgetown, Pawleys Island and Murrels Inlet. You can then continue north on 17 until you get to your stopping point!

From the West (Columbia and  beyond - Cincinnati, Knoxville) Take I-26 to go to the South End of Beach:

Exit I-26 at Exit 107B I-20 E to Florence and go north for about 0.4 miles. Continue on I-20 and go east for about 77 miles. Continue on I-20 Spur and go east for 2.1 miles. Turn left on US-76 and go east for 23 miles. Continue on SC-576 and go southeast for 3.1 miles. Continue on US-501-BR and go southeast for 0.9 miles.

Alternate Route from Columbia, SC (this is a back way - sometimes good to avoid traffic)

Take US – 378 East for approximately 45 miles to Sumter, SC. Take US – 521 South through Greeleyville and Andrews to Georgetown, SC (approx. 80 miles). Make a left onto US – 17 North. Follow directions at traffic light and turn right continuing on US – 17 North through Georgetown, Pawleys Island and Litchfield.

Alternate Route from I-95 North or South (this is also a back way and many of us take it when we want to avoid the "weekend traffic".

Take Exit # 122 (Alcolu) in South Carolina. Exit onto State Highway 521 South. Stay on Highway 521 South for Approximately 65 miles until you reach Georgetown, SC. You will travel through Manning, Greeleyville and Andrews during this time. When in Georgetown make a left onto Highway 17 North. Almost immediately Highway 17 will bear to your right (across from Burger King). Follow 17 North through Pawleys Island and Litchfield Beach, Murrells Inlet, all the way up 17 as far as you want to go.

(Watch your speed limits through the small towns - if it states 35 MPH - it means it!)
